Understanding California CNA Certification Requirements in 2026

California has specific requirements for becoming a certified nursing assistant. Whether you're just starting your research or ready to enroll, here's everything you need to know for 2026.

Training Hour Requirements

California requires a minimum of 160 hours of state-approved training, divided between classroom instruction and supervised clinical practice. At CI Institute of Nursing, our program meets and exceeds these requirements.

Background Check

All CNA candidates must pass a background check through the California Department of Justice and the FBI. This includes fingerprinting, which your training program will help you complete.

Competency Evaluation

After completing your training, you must pass the California Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation, administered by Pearson VUE. The exam consists of:

• A written knowledge test (or oral option) with 60 multiple-choice questions

• A clinical skills test where you demonstrate 5 randomly selected nursing skills

Registry Listing

Once you pass both parts of the exam, your name is added to the California Nurse Aide Registry. This listing must be renewed every two years, and you must complete at least 48 hours of in-service training and 8 hours of work during each renewal period.

Age & Education Requirements

You must be at least 16 years old (though most employers require 18) and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
