How to Prepare for the California CNA Competency Exam
April 30, 2026 · 7 min read
Congratulations! You've completed the 26-day CNA program. What's next? It's time to get certified.
What Is the California CNA Competency Exam?
After completing your state-approved CNA training program, you must pass the California Nurse Assistant Competency Examination to earn your certification. The exam is administered by Pearson VUE and consists of two parts: a written (or oral) knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation.
Part 1: The Written Test
The written test includes 60 multiple-choice questions covering topics such as:
Patient rights and safety
Communication and interpersonal skills
Basic nursing skills
Infection control
Mental health concepts
Personal care skills
You'll have 90 minutes to complete the written test. California requires a score of 70% or higher for you to pass.
Part 2: The Clinical Skills Test
During the skills test, you'll be asked to demonstrate 5 randomly selected nursing skills in front of an evaluator. Common skills include:
Handwashing
Taking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and temperature)
Positioning and transferring patients
Catheter care
Range of motion exercises
You'll have 30 minutes to complete all 5 skills.
Study Strategies That Work
Start Early
Don't wait until the last week before your exam. Begin reviewing material as soon as your training classes end, or even during your program.
Use Practice Tests
Take as many practice tests as you can find online. This helps you get familiar with the question format and identify weak areas.
Practice Skills Out Loud
When practicing clinical skills, narrate each step as you go. On exam day, the evaluator needs to see that you know not just the action but the reasoning behind it.
Study in Groups
Partner with classmates to quiz each other and practice skills together. Teaching a concept to someone else is one of the best ways to solidify your own understanding.
Exam Day Tips
Arrive 30 minutes early with your ID and confirmation letter.
Wear comfortable, professional clothing (scrubs are a safe choice).
Stay calm. If you've prepared, you're ready.
Read each question carefully before answering.
During skills testing, always introduce yourself and explain what you're about to do.
